Investigating Mathematics with Calculators in the Middle Grades: Activities for the TI-30Xa SE and TI-34

Scientific calculators have capabilities (for example, displaying numbers in exponential notation) that act as extensions of the number sense knowledge and calculating capabilities of middle grades students. With these tools, students can solve problems that might be too difficult or too time-consuming otherwise. The numbers included in these problems can be taken directly from real-world applications. These applications lay the groundwork for helping students apply their mathematical knowledge to other disciplines, such as science and social studies.
